Aurélie Pétrel

With her huge glass slides, Aurélie Pétrel transforms photography into something sculptural. The lyricism she conjures is the result of a precisely calculated experiment: a white haze of photographed smoke powder wafts through her images. Exposed on polyester film and affixed between two glass panels, they are kiln-fired at high temperature for several hours. The photograph and the glass coalesce, producing an illusionistic transparency in which it is no longer possible to distinguish between image and material.
